Varso Tower observation deck
In the capital, tradition blends with modernity—skyscrapers not found elsewhere in this part of Europe tower over historic buildings. The modern skyline has become one of the city’s characteristic elements. In the near future, a complex of observation decks will be opened on top of Varso Tower, the tallest building in Poland and the whole European Union. Its impressive height of over 310 meters ensures a breathtaking view from the 49th and 53rd floors which will linger long in the memory of everyone who has the opportunity to see it.
The new home of the Museum of Modern Art stands out due to its simple architecture, based on a plan of two rectangles. The building’s modern structure, located in the immediate vicinity of the Palace of Culture and Science, symbolically opens onto the space of Warsaw, bringing a new perspective to its centre. The glazed ground floor refers to the city, Defilad Square and the nearby park, and the monumental façade’s is broken up by a long window fissure that lets natural light into the interior. The relationship between external and internal space is clearly perceptible. With an area of nearly 20,000 m², the museum has four floors above ground and two below. February’s first exhibition, which will launch the museum, will feature a monumental abakan by Magdalena Abakanowicz and the works of contemporary artists including Sandra Mujinga, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Cecila Vicuña, a Chilean icon of feminist art, among other exhits.
New Centre of Warsaw
The Museum of Modern Art is not only an institution and tourist attraction but also a meeting space. Tourists and Varsovians alike will be able to spend time not just at the numerous exhibitions, but also in cafés, in the green forum and on the glazed ground floor, designed as a relaxation zone. The new building fits perfectly into plans to create a new Centre of Warsaw, which is to be green and full of services located on the ground floors of buildings: shops, cafés, and restaurants with al fresco dining areas. Convenient walkways and cycle paths are starting to connect squares and plazas in the centre of Warsaw into a coherent space—comfortable and friendly. This enables a strengthening of the centre’s existing assets—its cultural and entertainment attractions, trade and services. More and more trees and shrubs are appearing in the downtown area’s streets, providing shade, cleansing the air, and protecting against flooding during storms.
Chopin's Warsaw
Autumn will certainly belong to lovers of Chopin’s music. The next Chopin International Piano Competition, organised every five years, is the most important music event in Poland and one of the most prestigious competitions in the world. For almost 100 years, it has played a key role in popularising Chopin’s music, as well as in discovering outstanding piano talents and providing young artists with an excellent start to their international careers. The competition also serves as a platform for cultural exchange, which the world follows, admiring diverse interpretations of the brilliant composer’s works.
