Drop everything and head to the Vistula!

On the Warsaw stretch of the Vistula River, the summer attractions commence at the beginning of May. For 18 years, early May has marked the start of the Warsaw Tourist Lines’ services, whose three ferries on the Vistula—the Pliszka, Wilga and Słonka—run between the river’s banks. During May long weekend, they are joined by the Dudek ferry, which sails on the Młociny Marina–Tarchomin route, and with the arrival of first warm days, the Inna Bajka, a boat that connects Romantyczna beach with the Wilanów lakeshore. A new addition this season is the “Kopernik” ship—a Warsaw water tram created on the initiative of residents as part of the Participatory Budget.

The services of Capital Passenger Shipping are the jewel in the Vistula District’s crown. There is nothing as satisfying as the decks filling up on traditional wooden boats including barges, skiffs, and punts, among the many varieties available. The fleets of Warsaw navigators also include modern catamarans, motorboats, and ships. The full range of shipping attractions can be viewed on the profile of the city’s Greenery Authority (Zarządu Zieleni m.st. Warszawy), which takes care of day-to-day oversight and promotion of the Vistula District’s attractions.

In the summer season, the wide range of recreational cruises on offer is suplemented by trips on motorboats , speedboats, and extremely interesting educational cruises by the Kamień (Stone) Educational Pavilion on the Vistula. Throughout the summer you can meet onboard the boats Varsavianists (Warsaw enthusiasts), naturalists, ornithologists, and real rafters. Of course, for those who value close contact with nature, the Vistula District organises dawn and dusk cruises, as well as regular kayaking trips and stand-up paddleboarding which bring the panorama of both Warsaw’s banks closer in the most beautiful way. You can take advantage of the offer from Wawer to Park Żerański and Młociny. This season, we especially encourage you to take part in the regular sessions and training on Stand Up Paddle boards. Throughout the summer season, those who love combining activities are welcome to visit Port Czerniakowski and Przystań Warszawa for SUP and yoga.

On the water and on land

You should enjoy the aquatic attractions sensibly and in moderation, and above all under the supervision of experts who will devote sufficient time to safety instruction. That is why additional classes are organised in the summer season, including by the Kim Promotion and Recreation Foundation, SUP Academy, OSP (Volunteer Fire Service) Water Rescue, and Stołeczne WOPR (Capital Volunteer Water Rescue Service). In the spring, there are free activities to raise awareness of the dangers that can be encountered during riverside leisure, using SUP (Stand Up Paddle) boards, kayaking, or spending leisure time on the beaches.

Social gatherings are the most popular recreational activity on the Vistula. In early May, the outdoor cinema season starts on both the left and right banks. The largest Vistula beach—Poniatówka—transforms in the evenings into the most beautiful movie theatre under the stars. After dusk and at the end of the screening, it may be tempting to enjoy a bonfire overlooking the illuminated banks. However, please remember that bonfires can only be organized in designated areas, with proper respect for the Vistula nature and for other people spending time on the beaches. On the Warsaw stretch of the Vistula there are several dozen specially designated places for bonfires and firepits.

For those who like to dance in the moonlight, but not necessarily by the fire, each of the nearly 30 Vistula club-cafés offers dancing, concerts and musical entertainment. In summer, you can count on such attractions on warm weekend evenings.

From dusk till dawn

Short nights and long days mean life on the Vistula starts at dawn. A boat trip at sunrise is nothing unusual, and in the morning mist you can see rowing crews training. Along the riverbanks, meanwhile, you can come across runners and walkers listening to the birds singing. One of the Vistua District’s great strengths for many years has been the regular events and activities you can always count on. For those who prefer to stay in bed longer, there are many attractions that start in the late morning and go on till early evening. On Mondays, we recommend rowing classes on Saska beach and at Port Żerański with the Vistula For Rowers Association and ultimate frisbee on Rusałka beach. On Tuesdays, korfball training on Poniatówka beach, the park run and boxing classes under Świętokrzyski bridge ; on Wednesdays, street football under Łazienkowski Bridge with Warsaw FC, on Thursdays, yoga on Poniatówka beach along with Thursday and Saturday boatbuilding classes at the Szkutnia po Godzinach foundation, and roller skating training on the boulevard with the Pińska Flotilla (the inland branch of the Polish Navy), from where it is only a stone’s throw to the Warsaw Marina, where running sessions, dragon boat rowing and ergometer classes are held by the Wygywamy Olympic Society.

At SUP Academy, you can find your balance on a board, rent a kayak, or take part in special cruises and themed events on the welcoming waters of Dzielnica Wisła (Vistula Didtrict). In addition, for active types there are atmospheric yoga lessons and general development calisthenics training in a natural setting held on Wednesday mornings. Not far from the marina, on the waters of safe Czerniakowski Port, you can always count on summer sailing and rowing courses as well as classes in the dynamic and appealing sport of kayak polo with the Powiśle Sports Club (Klub Sportowy Powiśle).

But there is more to the weekend than concerts, theatre, and workshops for the whole family. In addition to a wide range of cultural events, every Saturday, whatever the weather, you can play chess with the Novel Initiatives Foundation (Fundacja Inicjatyw Niebanalnych), take part in a birdwatching walk, sightseeing bike trip all across the Vistula riparian forest with the Zielone Mazowsze Foundation or avail yourself of the offer of the Active Academy (Akademia Aktywności).

There are sure to be even more sports attractions available on the Vistula this season. The programme of regular sporting and recreational activities, tailored to every age and social group, is available as part of the “Aktywnie nad Wisłą”(Active on the Vistula) activities.

Europe's most beautiful urban beaches

As part of the Warsaw Greenery Authority’s anniversary summer, tried and tested events will make a comeback that always build community on the river. In the first weekend of June, Warszawski Plażowy (Warsaw Beach Host) will launch their free sun lounger rentals. What’s more, this summer guests are invited to the Beach Festival—monthly meetings on various urban beaches with a programme of workshops, concerts and recreational activities. This season, for the first time, we will meet in a unique format as we visit the Science Picnic at the PGE Narodowy stadium, which is, of course, located by the Vistula River. A new feature during the upcoming editions of the Beach Festival will be a stage dedicated to musicians wishing to showcase their work to a wider audience.

Warszawski Plażowy is a project carried out as part of the Vistula District campaign, which has been running for a decade. Currently, it includes four urban beaches: Żoliborz, Rusałka, Poniatówka, Saska, and the beach on the Gen. George Smith Patton Boulevard.

Thanks to the initiative, visitors can use recreational and beach equipment, as well as benefit from a constant source of information about the attractions on the Vistula and the natural attributes of the river’s Warsaw stretch. One of the project’s flagship features is cleaning the Vistula riverbanks, which is done together with local volunteers as part of the green volunteering program, run continuously by the Greenery Authority. Sun loungers, balls, and children’s toys are available to beachgoers. As part of the ‘Read on the Vistula’ campaign, outdoor libraries will also appear on the beaches.

For those who like planning

In late spring and early summer, among the events the Vistula will host are the Warsaw Wooden Boat Festival (May 23), Riverlights—the largest river boat parade in Poland, the Omega Regatta for the Mayor of Warsaw Cup (June 6), and the biggest rowing event on the Vistula River—Warsaw Head (June 14).

Dzielnica Wisła is also about culture, which we love bringing out onto the water. Just like in previous years, this year we invite you to our July concerts, which will drift from beach to beach, filled with the sounds of traditional Warsaw folk music.

This season, for the first time, we have scheduled the celebration of Warsaw’s Vistula River for August 2nd. In this way, we would like to honor the rivermen who sail into Warsaw for the symbolic commemorations of the Warsaw Uprising anniversary. Following Saturday’s “W-Hour” and Sunday’s Vistula Festival celebrations, traditional Vistula boats will head further downriver to the Vistula Festival. On the last days of summer, the Capital City of Warsaw invites you to a unique event – the international conference for river lovers, “United by Rivers” (September 3–4).

The educational part of the programme focuses on the Kamień Pavilion, which for years has been promoting knowledge of the Vistula River, and the ecology and fauna of this Natura 2000 area. The plan includes ornithological walks, ECOmornings, workshops for children and adults, as well as educational cruises devoted to birds, bats, the history of Warsaw, and nature photography. At the Kamień Pavilion, we are choosing the Tree of the Year and celebrating the latest edition of Warsaw in Bloom.

The end of summer in Dzielnica Wisła still carries the scent of holidays and the sound of music. That is partly why late September brings another edition of a truly magical and unique event – the Autumn Equinox (Równonoc). Traditionally, we gather to listen to music straight from boat decks surrounding a floating stage in the Czerniakowski Port.

For those who cannot bear to part with the river for long, we have, of course, our open-to-all Dzielnica Wisła Winter Swimming Academy, which will open its doors on the Saska Kępa Beach for the tenth time this year.

New places, old favourites

You are always welcome to Przystań Warszawa (Warsaw Marina hub), located in a quiet forest oasis in the heart of the capital. A modern centre has been built on the six-hectare site with a restaurant, café, SUP school, sailing, yoga, rowing, a gym and a theatre.

Hot days draw people to the Vistula more often, in search of shade and the chance to cool off by the water. The Vistula District has more to offer than its charming beaches and the shade of the forest along its right bank. Towards the end of last season, two new spots joined the ranks of favorite getaways along the Warsaw riverbanks.

The first is a bridge over the Czerniakowski port canal, which has been long awaited by cyclists and lovers of watersports. The crossing has facilitated communication on the Czerniakowski Headland and in the port itself and has become an exceptionally romantic and photogenic spot for anyone seeking closeness to nature in the heart of the city.

A still undiscovered spot on the map of Dzielnica Wisła is Żerański Park located on the western quay of the Żerań Canal—from Modlińska Street to Płochocińska Street. It is a new green part of the city and an attractive recreation and leisure area for Warsaw residents.. Visitors to the new park may stroll along the walkways and the boulevard by the canal, or use the jetties and picnic shelters. The park makes use of existing infrastructure located at the site, such as mooring posts and renovated loading platforms. The youngest visitors are sure to love the rope park and playground. The whole park is closely connected with the Żerań Canal, which is why its design is based on exploiting the area’s recreational properties, the riverside setting and the unique charm of the location. Lovers of resting and playing on the water can enjoy sailing and rowing classes, or end their kayak and SUP trips at one of the park’s piers. This summer season, the park’s highlights will include regular picnics, scenic cruises, and autumn sauna sessions. A food pavilion will also be completed in the near future, offering the perfect opportunity to spend even more time close to the water and nature.

It is worth remembering that all of the above proposals are completely free and addressed to virtually everyone. Because this is how the Vistula District is—for everyone. Drop everything and head to the Vistula!
