Flea Markets and Bazaars
Market, bazaar, antiques exchange—there are many names for the extraordinary phenomenon of the flea market. If you’re looking for something with a ‘soul’—clothing, a book or an item of furniture with its own history, visit one of Warsaw’s many street markets. You will always run into plenty of antique enthusiasts and regular bazaar-goers there.
For many Varsovians, visiting weekend fairs is an interesting pastime, while for others it’s truly a lifestyle. One of the capital’s largest and oldest bazaars is in the Koło neighbourhood and has been running since the 1980s. There you can find unusual antiques, ceramics, furniture and clothes.
The Olimpia bazaar is less for collectors but more diverse, with antiques and vinyl records on offer as well as clothes and food. This is a good place for those who like bargain hunting with no set purchase in mind. The bazaar at Namysłowska Street has a similar atmosphere—you can buy food and clothes here, sold not only by professional traders, but also by locals ‘airing’ their wardrobes.
Of the regular but less frequent flea markets, it is worth paying attention to the Falenica Antiques Exchange—due to its location on the outskirts of Warsaw, it has a rather more relaxed atmosphere. Once a year, at the turn of May and June, there is also a special Garage Sale in the Saska Kępa district. The inhabitants of this charming, pre-war neighbourhood put things out in front of their houses, and the ambience is much more informal. It’s an opportunity to look for stylish clothes and works of art that local artists are clearing out.
